Fujian Red Oolong
Red Oolong is a relatively new style of oolong tea. The oxidation degree of Red Oolong is somewhere between a typical oolong (30-70%) and a red tea (called "black tea" in the West, approximately 90-100%). The leaf is usually tightly rolled, as in Anxi oolongs. The infusion produces a deep red to amber colored drink, hence the name red oolong. The tea has a well-balanced flavor between cereal and caramel. The taste is smooth and rounded, with the complexity of oolong but also the full body and sweetness of red tea. Mouthfeel: smooth, almost velvety, less bitter or astringent than many black teas. This style was only developed in the 21st century by tea producers in Taiwan and Fujian. The goal was to create a tea that combines both the fresh florality of oolong with the depth and sweetness of red tea. Its balance certainly appeals to novice tea drinkers who are used to black tea but are curious about oolong.
