For hundreds of years, Tea has grown in the Northern hills of Thailand, in conditions similar to Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Assam, the golden triangle. Large-scale production of tea in northern Thailand began in the late 1980s at the direction of King Bhumibol Adulyadej to provide an alternative to the opium cultivation. Interest in growing tea was aroused as early as the 1950s when supporters of General Chiang Kai Shek flee to Thailand after a failed uprising against General Mao Zedong. Seedlings were imported from China and Taiwan, the cultivars were mainly Jin Xuan and Ruan Zhi (TTES 17). In the mid-1990s, machines, knowledge and training were also imported / organized from Taiwan.
