Shan Cha, wild tea, this tea grows between 800 and 1000 meters high, was picked in the fall of 2022 and comes from the Yu Chi area, Nantou, Taiwan. A full bodied, intense and very sweet tea, biscuits, spices including cinnamon, plums... This tea is picked from wild trees that grow randomly in the surrounding mountains of Yu-chi. The tea is picked early in the morning by native pickers who head to the mountains in search of wild tea. Shan Cha drinking is first described in writings dating back to the 17th century. The botanical characteristics resemble those of the Assamica tea bushes with its long leaves, but it is distinguished by an underground root system from which the shoots emerge. The bushes grow best in wild, mountainous areas with altitudes ranging from 650m to 1500m. The area where this tea comes from is protected, especially to preserve these special tea bushes. This biotope is cherished as a national treasure and the wild tea is considered the mother plant, which has spawned some very unique hybrid strains, including the famous TRES-18 Red Jade aka Hong Yu(e).
